Fitness Levels & Accessibility

You don’t have to be an experienced hiker or athlete to join my trips. Most experiences are beginner-friendly, and I always share fitness expectations upfront so you know exactly what to expect. If something ever feels too challenging, you can always sit out, rest, or take a more comfortable option.

Emergency Preparedness

We take safety seriously, and part of that is always being prepared for the unexpected. Every Shades of Nature trip has a clear plan in place so if something does happen, from twisted ankles to weather changes, you’re never left figuring it out alone.

Here’s what you can expect:

Emergency Contacts

  • Every traveler receives an emergency contact sheet before the trip.
  • You’ll have my direct number plus our local partner’s contact (for U.S. and international trips).
  • For international trips, you’ll also receive the closest clinic or hospital info.

First-Aid & Medical

  • We carry a fully stocked first-aid kit on all hikes and outdoor activities.
  • We are trained to handle minor injuries and situations like dehydration, overheating, altitude discomfort, and basic trail injuries.
  • For activities led by partners (ATVs, ziplining, rafting), all vendors are licensed, insured, and have their own medical-trained staff on-site.

Weather Monitoring & Alerts

  • We monitor weather daily in the days leading up to our trip.
  • If weather becomes unsafe (lightning, flooding, extreme heat, smoke), we switch to an alternate plan.
  • You’ll always know exactly what to expect before we head out.

Transportation Safety

  • Vehicles used for official trip activities are vetted and insured.
  • Drivers (especially international) are licensed and reputable.

Backup Plans

  • Every itinerary has a Plan B, especially for hikes, weather-sensitive activities, and high-attendance events.
  • If closures or unsafe conditions occur, the trip continues with alternate activities you’ll still love.

Your Role in Keeping Yourself Safe

Your Role in Staying Safe on the Trip

You don’t need to be an athlete, an expert traveler, or a “super hiker” to join my trips, but there are a few things you can do to keep yourself safe, comfortable, and confident.

Bring the Essentials

  • Please bring everything listed on your packing list.
  • Wearing the right shoes and clothing makes a huge difference in both safety and comfort.
  • Sunscreen, snacks, and water can prevent bigger issues.

Listen to Your Body

  • Take breaks when you need to.
  • Never hesitate to let me know if something feels off, dizziness, cramps, anxiety, anything.
  • You can always opt out of an activity; nothing is mandatory.

Communicate Early

  • If you have allergies, dietary needs, or medical conditions I should know about, tell me before the trip.
  • If something changes during the trip, tell me right away so I can help.

Follow Instructions During Activities

  • For hikes, water activities, ATV, ziplining, etc., please follow the guide’s instructions closely.
  • These rules are in place to keep us safe.

Stay with the Group

  • Community is our thing: we hike together, rest together, and make sure no one is left behind.
  • Always stay within eyesight of the group unless told otherwise.

Keep the Vibe Positive & Respectful

  • This is a space for joy, Black/brown representation, sisterhood/brotherhood, and connection.
  • Your energy matters. We leave negativity at home.

Community Standards & Respect Policy

Our Community Standards

Shades of Nature is a space where people feel seen, respected, and welcomed, especially people of color stepping into outdoor spaces that weren’t always built with us in mind. To protect that energy, we have a few simple standards:

Respect for All Travelers

  • No harassment, bullying, or discrimination of any kind.
  • No cliques or behavior that isolates others.
  • We respect different comfort levels, personalities, and fitness levels.

Respect for Nature

  • We follow Leave No Trace principles.
  • We don’t leave trash behind, disturb wildlife, or go off designated trails.
  • We protect the places we enjoy so others can too.

Respect for Cultural Norms (International Trips)

  • Be mindful of local customs, dress codes, and traditions.
  • Follow safety tips regarding money, photos, and public behavior.

No Alcohol Misuse on Group Activities

  • Alcohol may be allowed during free time, but not during hikes, water activities, or anything requiring balance/judgment.
  • Safety comes first.

Zero Tolerance Policy

  • Violence, hate speech, sexual harassment, physical aggression, or unsafe behavior results in immediate removal from the trip without refund.
  • This protects the peace for the entire group.

Protecting the Vibe

  • We travel with kindness, flexibility, and openness.
  • You never know who needs this trip, so we treat each other like family.

Travel Insurance (Optional but Encouraged)

Travel Insurance

While travel insurance is optional, we highly recommend it, especially for international trips or experiences that require flights.

Why It Helps:

  • Covers flight delays or cancellations
  • Protects your investment if you can’t attend due to illness
  • Helps with lost luggage
  • Offers medical coverage abroad
  • Gives you support if unexpected issues come up during travel

When You Should Consider It:

  • International trips
  • Trips during stormy/winter seasons
  • If you have connecting flights
  • If you’re traveling with expensive gear

Types of Insurance You Can Look For:
(Not brands — just categories)

  • Trip cancellation
  • Medical coverage
  • Emergency evacuation
  • Lost or delayed luggage
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR)

Note:
We're not affiliated with any insurance provider, but we always encourage guests to choose the option that fits their comfort level.
