How to Pack for an International Trip
Share
Everything you need to pack with confidence — without overthinking it.
Packing for an international trip can feel stressful, especially if it’s your first time or if you’re not used to long flights, new climates, or different luggage rules. But the truth is: once you know the basics, packing becomes so much easier.
This guide breaks everything down in a simple, beginner-friendly way so you know exactly what to bring (and what you can leave at home). Whether you're joining one of my Shades of Nature trips or planning your own adventure, this is the checklist you’ll want to save.
Let’s get into it.
1. Start With the Essentials: Documents + Must-Haves
Before you think about clothes, shoes, or outfits — make sure you have everything you need to get into the country.
The non-negotiables:
-
Passport (check that it isn’t expiring within 6 months)
-
Boarding pass (digital + saved offline)
-
Wallet + debit/credit card
-
Travel insurance info (if you have it)
-
Driver’s license or ID
-
Emergency contact list
-
Printed itinerary (just in case your phone dies)
-
Hotel/airbnb confirmations
-
Any required visas or QR code forms (varies by country)
Pro tip:
Make a photo album labeled “Travel Docs” and upload EVERYTHING. That way it’s all in one place.
2. Your Carry-On Bag Should Have Your Important Items
Checked bags get delayed way more often on international trips, so your carry-on should include anything you can't afford to lose.
Carry-On Essentials:
-
Passport + wallet
-
One full change of clothes
-
Travel-size toiletries
-
Medications (never pack these in checked luggage)
-
Charging cords + portable charger
-
Headphones
-
Snacks
-
Toothbrush + wipes
-
Valuables (jewelry, electronics, etc.)
-
A lightweight jacket or hoodie
-
Empty water bottle (fill after TSA)
Your carry-on is your safety net. Treat it like your “just in case anything happens” bag.
3. Pack Clothes You Can Mix, Match & Repeat
International travel is not the time to pack 12 outfits and 6 pairs of shoes. Choose items you can re-wear, layer, and mix into different looks.
Clothing Formula (Easy to Follow):
-
3–4 tops (neutral or travel-friendly colors)
-
2–3 bottoms (shorts, leggings, skirts, or lightweight pants)
-
1–2 dresses/rompers (optional)
-
1 lightweight layer (cardigan, button-up, or fleece)
-
1 jacket (windbreaker or packable puffer depending on weather)
-
Several pairs of underwear + socks
-
Sleepwear
-
Swimsuit (even if you’re “not planning to swim”… just bring it lol)
Shoes:
Stick to 2–3 pairs max
-
Comfortable walking shoes
-
Sandals or slides
-
Activity shoes (if hiking or adventure days are planned)
If you're joining one of my trips, check the itinerary — I'll always tell you how many outfits you’ll realistically need.
4. Toiletries: Keep It Simple
Use travel-size containers and keep everything TSA-friendly if you’re not checking a bag.
Must-Have Toiletries:
-
Toothbrush + toothpaste
-
Facial cleanser + moisturizer
-
Body wash + lotion
-
Deodorant
-
Sunscreen
-
Hair products (mini versions)
-
Makeup basics (only what you actually use)
-
Lip balm
-
Shower cap / bonnet
-
Personal hygiene items
Optional but Helpful:
-
Mini first-aid kit
-
Pain reliever
-
Tums/Imodium
-
Bandages
-
Travel-size perfume
Remember: most places sell toiletries. You don’t need to bring your whole bathroom.
5. Electronics & Travel Gear
This is where beginners usually forget something important.
Essentials:
-
Portable charger
-
Phone charger
-
Camera (optional)
-
Universal power adapter (MUST for most countries)
-
Earbuds or noise-canceling headphones
-
Lightweight tripod (if you record content)
-
Outlet splitter (if you travel with multiple devices)
For long flights:
-
Neck pillow
-
Compression socks
-
Eye mask
-
Light blanket or oversized scarf
These items make a huge difference when you're sitting for 6–12 hours.
6. Safety & Convenience Items
These help you feel more prepared and comfortable abroad.
-
Crossbody travel bag
-
Mini lock for luggage
-
RFID travel wallet (optional)
-
Reusable water bottle
-
Small packable tote
-
Ziplock bags (trust me, always helpful)
-
Travel towel (if doing beaches or waterfalls)
-
Waterproof phone pouch (for boat days)
7. Pack According to Your Itinerary (Not Vibes Alone)
If you're joining one of my Shades of Nature trips, you’ll get a detailed packing list based on:
-
the weather
-
the activities
-
the terrain
-
the cultural norms
-
comfort vs adventure days
But here’s a simple way to plan anywhere:
Ask yourself:
-
Are we hiking? → pack activewear + trail shoes
-
Are we doing water activities? → pack swimsuits + quick-dry clothes
-
Are we going to nice dinners? → pack 1–2 elevated outfits
-
Is the weather unpredictable? → pack layers
Packing for what you’ll actually do is the key to not overpacking.
8. Try the “3-2-1 Method” for Shoes and Outfits
This works for nearly every destination:
-
3 tops
-
2 bottoms
-
1 outer layer
-
3 pairs of shoes MAX
This keeps your luggage light and your stress low.
9. Don’t Forget the Important Extras
These are small but important:
-
Snacks (especially if you have dietary needs)
-
Cash for small markets or tips
-
Refillable water bottle
-
Hand sanitizer
-
Travel wipes
-
Pen (for customs forms)
10. My Biggest Packing Tip: Less Is Better
You don’t need a different outfit for every day.
You don’t need 10 pairs of shoes.
You don’t need to reinvent your style for the trip.
The best-packed bags are the ones with items you actually wear.
Travel is about the experience — not the suitcase.
At the end of the day...
Packing for an international trip doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start with the essentials, build your outfits around comfort and versatility, and keep things simple.
